Spring 2024
All the Italian classes at Casa Italiana are held in full immersion and English is used only when needed.
The primary objective of all courses is to encourage and develop speaking and comprehension skills.
Levels are based on the CEFRL (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
You can easily find the class that best suits your level and goals.
If you are not sure about your level of knowledge of the language, schedule a Placement Test.
Note: all the in-person classes are at 595 Third Street.
BEGINNER CLASSES

In giro per l'Italia/Traveling through Italy
This course aims to take Italy lovers on a panoramic tour across the Bel Paese. We will take an in-depth look at the different regions comprising Italy and learn what makes each of them special. Each region will be introduced via a visual oral presentation, followed by interactive activities designed to help students expand their vocabulary and improve their language skills. The course is aimed at intermediate students of Italian wishing to learn more about famous destinations and discover less-known gems in view of a possible trip to Italy.
This course consists of 5 modules focused on different regions in Italy. Students can choose to attend as many modules as they wish. Course materials will be provided by the instructor.

Through grammar and reading of "La fuga di Bach" students will review the major challenges in Italian grammar, including the verb system, areas of contrast with the English language, and some vocabulary issues. This course is focused on improving grammar and fluency.

In this advanced course, students will discover some of the most important Italian authors of the second half of the Nineteenth century and contemporary writers. They will read excerpts of some famous books and articles of renowned journalists, always supported by short biographies of the authors. SHORT STORY READING CLUB (Intermediate Conversation)
Do you love reading and discussing literature but prefer to read something shorter than a book? Have you heard of “flash fiction”, “microfiction” or “twitterature”? These terms refer to very short pieces of writing. In this club, each week before the club meeting, we will read a short story, from single-digit word stories to longer texts, but none longer than about 1000 words. During the club we will discuss the short story using the literature circle format. Each week students will take on a different role in the discussion such as cultural connector, word master, plot summarizer or discussion leader. The teacher and students will also take turns choosing stories which will represent authors from around the world.
